Tale
Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is
Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer calls in Sam to protect her. Bingo, the owner of the guitar shop where Sam buys his guns, is played by Rat Scabies, a member of the classic punk band The Damned.
Featured in Graham Norton I liked: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024)
There’s a lot to like about Black Doves, once you get past the fact that it’s pretty implausible! Keira Knightley plays the wife of the UK’s Minister of Defence, who is actually a trained assassin working for a shadowy organisation (yes, yes, she would never have passed muster, I know!).
The plot introduces some of her colleagues, which include a mixed bag of characters but are actually quite entertaining, with a nod to Guy Ritchie
There’s an underlying element of homosexuality with co-star Ben Wishaw playing a homosexual who was groomed as a killer by his father, who was also one. This gave Wishaw the opportunity to play a rather subtle and tortured role in a very sympathetic way, but it reminds me of why my wife and I started liking Korean and Japanese dramas where there’s no explicit sex depicted.
The plot moves along at a good pace and there are some wonderful caricatures in the mixed group of killers in Black Doves
The plot involves a gang war, the CIA and an international incident that threatens to set off a major feud between China, the UK and the US. Overall, despite being really far-fetched, it’s an enjoyable watch and Knightly does a credible job of being a rather creepy girl, quite believable in her role.
Definitely worth a watch!
