The film crew of the horror web series goes to an abandoned shelter for a live broadcast. They soon encounter much more than expected as they delve into the old, nightmarish building. The filmmakers were unable to get permission from the South Korean government to film in a real hospital, so the walls of the film shot in Gongjiam were actually filmed at the National Maritime School in Busan, and the crew strictly adhered to the hospital’s floor plan to recreate the exact same look and hallways. Charlotte keeps looking away when the group is in front of the hospital. She of course responds, smiling at whoever it was. Links Homecoming on Ghost Hill (2007). I am usually critical of found footage horror films, because they are usually unnecessary and add nothing to the story. Usually, found footage films are more suited to a “normal” film. This does not apply to “Gonjiam: Ghostly Asylum”. With the new advanced technology and the reason why the actors know how to work the camera, the film serves its purpose perfectly. There is some camera shake and other “effects” that you usually see in found footage, which, in my opinion, ruins the film. The story itself is pretty standard: 7 young “ghost hunters” end up in an old mental asylum, mostly for the sake of exposure and profit, which makes it more realistic than other similar films. The pacing of the film is pretty slow and nothing happens in the first half, but it’s worth it! I was originally going to give this film a 6, but considering it’s a horror film and one of the scariest in its subgenre that I’ve ever seen, I’ve upped the score to a 7. If you want a scary film with no particular plot, this is the film for you.
